RRFF Partners With Little Kids Rock to Launch a New Series of Interdisciplinary Lessons

The Rock and Roll Forever Foundation has partnered with Little Kids Rock to present a new series of lessons that explore popular songs and the stories behind them.

Little Kids Rock is a national nonprofit that trains public school teachers to deliver Modern Band music classes and provides instruments to the schools at no cost. This innovative series of lessons contextualizes specific songs from the Little Kids Rock songbook, including “Hound Dog,” “Twist and Shout,” “Blowin’ in the Wind,” and “Chain of Fools.”

Each chapter in this growing curriculum includes Little Kids Rock Modern Band song charts and an interdisciplinary lesson created by the Rock and Roll Forever Foundation. Popular songs have always been living pieces of history, cultural fragments with stories embedded in them. By approaching music this way, students who learn to play a song on guitar, bass, keys, drums, or ukulele can gain a deeper understanding and have a richer music-making experience. Each of our lessons serves to situate a musical recording within its moment, exploring the categories of person, place, and time in order to establish historical, geographical, and social context.

The curriculum, song charts, and teaching methodology can be viewed online at RRFF Partnership Lessons: Little Kids Rock. In addition to online materials, the curriculum will be presented at multiple professional development events nationwide during the 2016/17 school year.
